Our Curriculum
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
At Jacquie’s Place we offer a balanced and broadly based curriculum, based around the Early Years Foundation Stage as compiled by the DFES. At the core of our educational policy are the seven areas of learning and development that shape our curriculum. All areas of learning are important and inter-connected.
The seven (7) areas are split into two(2) namely:
- Prime Areas
- Specific Areas
The three (3) prime areas are:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As babies and children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in four (4) Specific areas.
The four (4) specific areas through which the three prime areas are strengthened and applied are:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
We teach Reading with the use of Synthetic Phonics. Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy take place every day, all around us. Please note that each child is an individual and will learn at it’s own pace. We need to ensure that each child has a secure foundation and scaffolding on which to build their learning.
We use topic-based themes to reinforce all areas of the curriculum.
Curriculum and Activities
Our entry class is carefully structured so that the children’s transition from home to school and their subsequent introduction to school activities are positive, rewarding and happy experiences.
We provide opportunities for children to learn across all areas of development from a huge variety of activities throughout the day. These include French and Music.
Our daily activities include singing, role play, construction and free play, outdoor play and stories, all of which are continued throughout the school. We also introduce pre-reading and pre-writing skills and begin practical numeracy.
We aim to give a firm foundation in the basic skills of language and number and do this largely through enjoyable as well as educational activities.
Within the groups, all children are supported in their potential at their own pace. Our teacher to child ratio of 1:5 for children under three and 1:7 for children three years and above. This enables us to ensure that the planned curriculum is tailored to the needs of each individual child. By means of developmentally appropriate play, activities and a high level of individual adult input, we offer an educational environment that leads to nationally approved learning outcomes and prepares children to progress with confidence to the National Curriculum at the age of five years.
